Soldier John Martnick, a well-known Wood River Foreigner, died February, 1919 at Camp Custer, Michigan, and his body was brought to Wood River for burial. The body was at
Streeper Undertaking Parlor in Wood River.

All soldiers in the neighborhood were asked to attend his funeral. Interment was in the Alton City Cemetery.

Before entering service, Martnick was employed at Standard Oil Company.
